Cementing our position as a leading exporting nation

Our voice of Buckinghamshire Business this week is:
Steve Rankin, the CBI's Thames Valley Regional Director.

“Although the UK is making progress in the fast-growing economies of Asia and Latin America – specifically the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) – it still lags behind some of its international rivals, and recent official trade figures showed that the UK’s deficit on trade in goods and services was £3.6 billion in February. Growing mid-sized companies with the potential to enter new markets must be at the forefront of any export-led recovery. But too many businesses are impeded by the perceived risks and costs of exploring new overseas markets, with only one fifth of the UK’s SMEs exporting, compared with a quarter across the European Union.

    Onwards and upwards!

Our voice of Buckinghamshire Business this week is:
Alex Pratt, Chairman of the Buckinghamshire Thames Valley LEP.

The LEP Network Annual Conference was held in London on 18 April bringing together significant figures from government, civil servants, as well as representatives from Local Enterprise Partnerships and the wider economic community. The Rt. Hon. Lord Heseltine was among the speakers at the conference and 'Tarzan Hezza' issued a clear challenge to the 39 volunteer LEP Chairs: Gird your loins. This time it's serious and it's going to be difficult. It's not what you signed up for, but are you up for it? If not, please get out of the growth kitchen!
